Moving to Melbourne from Wellington four and a half years ago, resident Kiwi Rene Bushell found her way to Pilates after years of chronic back pain. Amazed by the transformation in her body, and rapid reduction in her pain, she was inspired to turn her passion into a part-time profession.

How long have you been practising Pilates?
When did you decide to teach Pilates?
About two and a half years ago when I saw the amazing effect that Pilates had on me and my body and recovery. Pilates hasn’t only helped my back pain, it’s helped my knee, neck and ankle pain too! Learning what I needed to strengthen and stretch for each injury, pain and niggle has continued to help me become pain free. I wanted so badly to be able to share the benefits of Pilates with people like me.
Have you had any career highlights?
Just the other day I had a client tell me that before starting her Pilates training with me she was booked in for a knee reconstruction, and that she has just cancelled that operation because we’ve got her to a place of being pain free – so much so that she is running again!
Is there anything unique about your approach to teaching Pilates?
I try and make my classes as fun and upbeat as possible. I make friends with my clients and make sure that they look forward to coming to my classes a few times a week. I want people to leave my classes feeling worked, but also having that awesome rush of serotonin from having had a bit of a laugh.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Helping people become a bit better than they were the day or week before. Seeing the satisfaction on my clients’ faces as they see their own progress and growth.
What’s the biggest mistake people make in Pilates class?
Not speaking up about injuries and pain. I want to be able to work with you to reach your goals, but I need you to work with me too.
And the biggest misconception people have about Pilates?
Pilates is for girls or people with really bad injuries. Pilates is for absolutely everyone and I promise you you’ll leave class having had a solid workout – no matter who and how fit you may be.
What can students expect in your Reformer Pilates classes?
Great banter, tough exercises, upbeat music, an overall good time and the slowest countdown from 10 you could ever imagine. But most of all expect to work hard for the strong, pain-free body you want to have.
What’s your favourite thing about working in Melbourne CBD?
All the awesome people from all different industries and with such different stories that I get to meet and talk to every day. I feel so lucky!
What would you be doing if you weren’t a Pilates instructor?
I’m a part-time instructor. I’m also a Fashion Design student at RMIT University which takes up almost all the rest of my time!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
My own training! Every day I try to find some spare time to put on some music and move my body.
What’s your secret talent?
Helping you activate your glutes like you’ve never experienced before! But that doesn’t stay a secret for long!
