Effective Physiotherapy Treatment for Knee Pain & Injuries

At The Alignment Studio, we specialise in knee physio to help our Melbourne clients overcome knee pain, recover from injury and return to their busy lives.
Whether you’ve ruptured your ACL playing netball or footy, are dealing with chronic pain or recovering from knee surgery, our expert physiotherapists provide tailored care to relieve your symptoms, restore mobility, and improve your quality of life.
A complex, weight-bearing joint, the knee is highly susceptible to injury, and we often see knee problems in athletic clients, those in physical occupations, and as a result of trauma, ageing and obesity.
Acute or chronic, knee pain can restrict physical activity and cramp your lifestyle. Thankfully, knee physio is highly effective, and our skilled team is here to help.

Common Knee Injuries and Conditions

As the home of quality physiotherapy in Melbourne, we regularly encounter these common knee problems.
Knee joint structure

Ligament Sprains & Tears

Mention the words ‘ACL tear’ and most runners and athletes will grimace in recognition.  However, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament is just one of four that connect the femur (thighbone) and tibia (shin bone) and stabilise your knee joints. And all are vulnerable to injury.
The ACL is often injured in sudden stops and direction changes in sports.  ACL Tears and injuries account for around 40% of all sports injuries, with symptoms including severe pain and swelling, instability and a popping noise.

Knee Osteoarthritis

Associated with ageing, this degenerative condition causes discomfort, stiffness and swelling as knee cartilage breaks down and bones rub together.  Thankfully, our GL:AD Program for osteoarthritis can assist.

Meniscus Tears

Tears to the shock-absorbing cartilage of the knee joint cause pain, problems bending or straightening the knee, a locking sensation and swelling.  Sudden twisting movements are often to blame; however, tears can result from degeneration.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Iliotibial Band Syndrome is the most common cause of lateral (outer) knee pain in runners. It results from tightness of the Iliotibial Band, a fibrous band running from the outside of the hip to the outside of the knee.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner’s Knee)

This condition causes pain around or behind the patella (kneecap), often with a gradual onset caused by increased loading.  It’s common in runners, with pain worsening when the knee is flexed when climbing and descending stairs, squatting or sitting for prolonged periods.

Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)

Linked to stress from sports involving jumping or running, this injury involves inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap and shinbone (tibia), causing tenderness below the knee.

Bursitis

Another common injury is bursitis – inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) cushioning the knee joint.  Symptoms include pain, tenderness to touch, and swelling, and can arise from direct trauma or excessive kneeling.

Sinding-Larsen-Johansson Syndrome and Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Affecting adolescents, these painful conditions are overuse injuries to the growth plate of the knee.

Fractures

Often resulting from falls or car accidents, breaks in the bones that make up the knee can come with severe pain, swelling, bruising and restricted movement.

Patellar (Kneecap) Dislocation

This painful injury occurs when the kneecap slides sideways out of place, usually due to a collision, sudden twisting movement or fall.  The knee will often be visually deformed, swollen and difficult to move.

Baker’s Cyst

A fluid-filled lump at the back of the knee can occur with arthritis or an injury such as a cartilage tear, causing joint stiffness and discomfort.

FAQs

Physiotherapy is very beneficial for knee pain.  Your physio will address your pain with manual therapy, stretching, mobility and strengthening exercises, and education on injury prevention.
In most cases, a physio can diagnose the cause of your knee pain, request imaging, and when required, provide surgical and specialist referrals, as well as hands-on treatment and rehabilitation.
Rest is crucial in acute knee injuries to reduce inflammation and avoid exacerbating damage.  For chronic knee pain, low-impact activity like walking can strengthen surrounding muscles and enhance circulation and range of movement.
