VALD Performance Testing in Melbourne: For Everyday Clients to Elite Athletes

Take the guesswork out of rehab, prehab and performance with objective data that informs every treatment and training decision.

Measure your strength, power and movement technique with VALD performance testing in Melbourne CBD. Using cutting-edge equipment and objective metrics – not gut feel – VALD testing is equally valuable for athletes, older and everyday clients, forming the foundation of The Alignment Studio’s Clinical Strength program.

Our experienced physiotherapists utilise VALD testing to ensure every client meets their movement potential. Whether you’re returning to your sport after ACL surgery, struggling with desk-induced back pain or worried about falls, VALD’s data-driven insights allow us to design your rehab program or time your return to play with precision.

What Is VALD Testing?

Used by elite sporting teams, physiotherapists and training institutions, VALD performance testing harnesses cutting-edge sports science technology to pinpoint your biomechanical strengths and weaknesses. And identify injury risk.

The VALD system assesses your force, power, strength, balance, speed and asymmetry through a range of exercises, providing you with an objective measurement of your movement quality – and how you compare to others in your specific sport, age group or performance level.

With millions of data points visible in the VALD Hub, we can create a clear path towards your performance goals and make informed decisions about your rehabilitation.

What VALD Equipment do We Use?

Our VALD-trained physios, Matt and Maysam, use ForceDecks and DynaMo technology in their comprehensive performance assessments.

ForceDecks – excellent at identifying left-right asymmetry and assessing balance, dual force plates measure how force is produced, transferred and absorbed by the body during movements like squats and jump-and-landing tasks.

DynaMo – VALD’s portable dynamometer assesses dynamic and isometric strength, and range of motion. It measures muscle contractions and captures real-time data during a range of functional movements, such as knee flexion (to test hamstring strength) and shoulder rotations (to test rotator cuff strength and stability), to identify areas of weakness and compensatory movements.

Objective Data Meets Clinical Expertise

VALD technology gives our skilled clinicians total confidence in building strength and rehab programs that will deliver real, measurable results.
More Accurate Clinical Decisions
Objective measurements help eliminate human error, revealing strength deficits or asymmetries that can’t be seen. This allows us to tailor each program for safe and effective progression.
Clear Return-to-Play Criteria
In sport, returning too soon – or too late – can cost you. VALD helps us time things perfectly, with clear benchmarks and quantitative data driving decision-making.
Reduced Reinjury Risk
Unaddressed, underlying asymmetries and poor landing mechanics will often see you back at the physio. By tailoring your program to address these, we can reduce your risk of re-injury.
Progress You Can See
Think you’re not getting stronger? The proof is in VALD’s detailed visual reports, which allow us (and you) to see your training or rehab progress and keep you on track and motivated.
Ideal for Every Age, Activity and Performance Level

While VALD technology is used to hone athletic performance in the AFL, NRL and NBA, movement analysis isn’t just for elite athletes. Here’s how TAS physios use the ForceDecks and DynaMo for movement testing and muscle strength testing in different clients.

Desk Workers: The first step is using the DyanMo to assess the postural muscles of the neck and shoulders for both mobility and strength.

Athletes: The VALD ForceDecks are used to assess lower-limb strength, plyometrics, and maximum force output (to look for any imbalances).

Older Clients: For an older person with increased fall risk, the ForceDecks are an ideal tool for assessing single-leg balance.

Integrated With Our Strength & Rehab Programs

At The Alignment Studio, our VALD performance assessments aren’t just a ‘nice to have’ – they underpin our entire rehabilitation and performance program.

Our one-to-one and small-group Clinical Strengthening classes and Matt’s Learn to Lift sessions incorporate your unique VALD data to ensure you have an effective program with clear, measurable progression.

From Bulgarian split squats to deadlifts, we’ll ensure you experience progressive overload without compromising movement quality. Where relevant, we also integrate Pilates-based principles to improve control, alignment and mobility.

What to Expect During Your VALD Assessment

Initial consult

Your physio will take a detailed history of your injuries and discuss your goals, from optimising your sporting performance to resolving chronic hip pain.

Baseline testing

We’ll then run you through exercises. This might include balance and jump assessments and isometric strength testing, such as the isometric mid-thigh pull, to provide a clear picture of your physical performance.

Data review

Matt or Maysam will walk you through your comprehensive report and explain how your numbers stack up against benchmarks for similar groups.

Program recommendations

We will create a personalised program with a measurable pathway forward. Most clients will move into our Clinical Strengthening classes, with the option to also join Matt’s Learn to Lift sessions.

Follow-up retesting

To keep on top of your progress, we will often re-test at appropriate intervals, generally 6-weekly, to ensure your progression.

FAQs

VALD testing is an objective way to measure all aspects of performance – from strength and power to balance and range of motion. It helps to identify deficits, movement asymmetries and injury predictors.

Initial assessments at The Alignment Studio last 1 hour and include a thorough consultation about your injuries/ pain and goals, as well as running you through the relevant tests.
No! The testing is equally valuable for anyone – whether you’re a gym goer, have neck pain from desk work or are worried about your fall risk as you age.
This will depend on your specific strength or rehab program and your goals. In general, we like to retest every 6 weeks.
Yes, we also use the Y-Balance Test and FMS Movement Screen as appropriate.
