MEET PHYSIOTHERAPIST, MAYSAM AL-BERMANI

Pete Hunt

Relocating to Melbourne in November and joining The Alignment Studio team this month, Maysam Al-Bermani is a passionate physiotherapist skilled at managing complex musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

Obtaining her undergraduate degree from The University of Queensland and a Masters of Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy from the University of Brighton (UK) in 2015, she has honed her practice in Brisbane and abroad—working alongside orthopaedic surgeons as a locum for the NHS.

Read on to learn more about Maysam’s path into physiotherapy, her treatment style, and how she balances her work, leisure and wellbeing.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PHYSIO?

I decided to become a physio because I’ve always been active, and I’m passionate about empowering people to live their best, pain-free lives. I’ve always loved understanding how the body works and helping others achieve things they never thought possible.

I knew I wanted to be a physio when I saw how impactful rehabilitation could be for my friends and family. Being active has always been a big part of my life, and I know how frustrating it is when injuries get in the way of doing what you love. I wanted to be in a position to help people stay active, prevent injuries, and keep doing what they enjoy.

WHAT DREW YOU TO MELBOURNE?

I moved to Melbourne in November because I was drawn to the vibrant, exciting energy of a bigger city. Melbourne’s unique culture, incredible lifestyle, and endless opportunities made it the perfect choice for a fresh start.

WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

I’ve worked in both Brisbane and the UK. In Brisbane, I spent 2.5 years in a hospital setting, covering geriatrics, cardiac, rehabilitation, and orthopaedics. In the UK, I worked as a locum through the NHS in multiple roles, focusing on musculoskeletal and rehabilitation wards.

The highlight of my career so far has been completing my further education in the UK. It gave me invaluable experience, a broader perspective on physiotherapy, and the opportunity to work with incredible mentors and patients.

WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF SPECIAL INTEREST?

I have a strong interest in managing complex musculoskeletal conditions, post-orthopaedic rehabilitation, and injury prevention. I’m particularly passionate about movement education and strength-based training, helping clients regain confidence in their bodies.

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR TREATMENT STYLE?

My holistic approach to treatment combines manual therapy, dry needling, shockwave therapy, exercise, Pilates and tailored education.

I take the time to understand each client’s history, ensuring no contributing factors are overlooked, and make sure they feel supported and empowered in their recovery.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE JOB?

My favourite part of the job is helping patients achieve goals they never thought possible—whether it’s returning to sport, walking pain-free, or simply moving with confidence. I also love seeing them develop a deeper understanding of their bodies and realise their potential.

IS THERE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH CLIENTS LISTENED TO?

Your body is like a car engine—if you don’t maintain it, it may still work, but not as efficiently or for as long. Regular “servicing” through movement, strength training, and self-care ensures it performs at its best and lasts you a lifetime.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT WORKING AT TAS?

I’m excited to be part of a great team that values collaboration and growth, while also working in such a central and dynamic location. I love the diversity of Melbourne’s CBD—the endless options of cafes, restaurants, and the vibrant energy of the city make every day exciting.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH TO WELLNESS?

My approach to wellness is holistic—targeting all aspects of physical and mental health. This includes strength training, yoga, cardio, good nutrition, and rest, all balanced to support long-term health.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T WORKING AS A PHYSIO?

I’d be in the fashion industry, designing and creating clothing. I’ve always loved the idea of building my own brand and expressing creativity through design.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I love staying active, whether it’s going to the gym, exploring the outdoors, or going for long walks. I also love getting lost and discovering new cafes and restaurants and spending time with my family and friends.

HOW DO YOU STAY IN BALANCE?

Maintaining a routine that incorporates strength training, yoga, outdoor walks, and quality time with friends and family. For me, balance is about doing all the things that bring me joy and fulfilment throughout the week.

DO YOU HAVE A HIDDEN TALENT?

Weirdly being able to remember numbers and birthdays. It’s a random but surprisingly useful skill that always surprises people!
